EPEE, representing the refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump industry in Europe, supports the principle of setting Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and Energy Labels, regulated in the EU under the Ecodesign Directive and the Energy Labelling Framework Regulation.

Based on over a decade of experience with numerous product groups regulated by this framework, EPEE would like to share with the stakeholder community seven lessons learned, critical success factors and recommendations from an industry perspective in Europe for those countries considering proposing or implementing legislation following the European MEPS model.

One of the conclusions reached is that, notwithstanding their success in many countries, MEPS have shown their limitations. The energy challenge cannot be solved at product level. An integrated approach, looking at both energy supply and demand side measures and taking into account the entire system, will be crucial to reach European and global energy and climate goals.

Celebrating its 20^th anniversary this year, EPEE, the European Partnership for Energy and the Environment, published a video with a compilation of messages from its members.

EPEE’s members, representing the heating and cooling industry, contribute with their technologies to ensuring that European citizens have healthy, productive and comfortable living and working environments, fresh and safe food and best in class healthcare.

EPEE Director General Andrea Voigt said: “It’s been 20 years already, time flies! 20 years during which our association has become one of the leading voices of our industry sector, with currently more than 50 members from across the globe. Today, more than ever, we are focussed on making our world a better place with sustainable technologies for the health of people and the planet.”

EPEE members take their responsibility very seriously and are continuously innovating to provide long-term solutions to maximise the benefits of cooling for society in a safe, affordable, and environmentally sustainable manner. EPEE is committed to pursuing its work, its dialogue with EU policymakers, collaboration with partners around the world, and looks forward to continuing its path to help the EU achieve its climate and energy goals.

EPEE, representing the heating and cooling industry in Europe, supports the Commission’s ambition to at least double the current renovation rate and facilitate deep renovation across Europe. The Renovation Wave has the potential to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels, while cutting energy bills and improving the health and wellbeing of EU citizens.

But for this to become reality, the Renovation Wave must put its weight behind projects that holistically consider the overall energy performance and health benefits of the building, including technical building systems like heat pumps and air conditioners. By accelerating the switch to efficient state-of-the-art heating and cooling systems, the Renovation Wave will boost both energy efficiency and indoor environment quality of European homes and workplaces.

EPEE Director-General Andrea Voigt said “The Commission is right to target public buildings. Schools and hospitals are the low-hanging fruit – these are the buildings where action can be taken quickest and the rewards to be reaped are greatest. Not only can we aggregate and scale such projects at a rapid pace, but these are also the buildings where adequate Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and thermal comfort are most important for increasing productivity as well as health and well-being.”

The energy system of tomorrow will be based on buildings that provide demand side flexibility and storage solutions to the grid. To kick-start the transition towards a more circular and efficient energy system, the Renovation Wave must equip our buildings with advanced heating and cooling systems that can optimise consumption, interact with smart grids, store energy and integrate renewables.

As the European Commission begins to review the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED), Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) in order to fulfil the objectives of the Renovation Wave, EPEE stands ready to work with EU policy-makers to explore how these key legislative initiatives can be used to boost the adoption of low-carbon heating and cooling systems.
