EUROCONTROL Saves Costs and Energy With New Breakthrough Cooling System

EUROCONTROL’s air-traffic flow management and data centres require constant cooling for optimal performance and stable operations. Thermal issues account for more than one-third of unplanned data centre outages.

To prevent overheating, Honeywell, EUROCONTROL, and ENGIE Axima collaborated on a new cooling system for EUROCONTROL’s data centre.

  • The new cooling system is comprised of two Quantum® chillers with unique remote condensers and two water-cooled Quantum chillers, achieving a total refrigeration capacity of 5MW.
  • The dual chiller configuration allows for redundancy, with both chillers operating on just 50 percent of their full load capacity.
  • The new system uses equipment and service provided by ENGIE Axima and Solstice® ze (R-1234ze) refrigerant supplied by Honeywell. Solstice ze is part of the Honeywell Solstice family that enables customers to reduce their carbon footprint without sacrificing performance. It’s based on Honeywell’s hydrofluoro-olefin (HFO) technology with a GWP of less than 1.
  • By switching from an older, less efficient cooling system to this new ENGIE Axima-Honeywell solution, EUROCONTROL has incorporated technology that is strategically designed to meet its needs over the next two decades and future-proofs it for performance, safety, efficiency and environmental impact.
